Copenhagen, Denmark -  A 19-year-old man, whose victim died after an assault at a Copenhagen disco, broke down in tears in court today after recounting the events of late Saturday night.

The victim, Kevin Jelstad also 19, died after hitting his head on a table after being punched three times by his attacker.

The incident occurred after a standoff between two groups at the nightclub Celsius, where the accused claims he only attacked because he felt threatened.

In court today the accused broke down during his testimony, in which he described Jelstad as having “scary mean eyes” and that Jelstad twice threatened to assault him.

After repeatedly punching Jelstad, the accused left the disco and did not find out until the next day that his victim had died. He then turned himself in to police accompanied by his family.

The man is being charged with assault resulting in death, which is punishable with up to three years in prison. Failing that, he will be charged with assault and involuntary manslaughter.

The accused denies the charge of assault resulting in death, and was released after the hearing today.

It is now being determined whether the cause of death was the punches or the hit on the head.

“There is no visible injury to the deceased that shows the punches were directly linked to his death. He may have already had a weakness in his brain,” a doctor told the court.

Jelstad’s girlfriend, speaking to B.T. newspaper, said she was devastated to have lost him.

“If you were a good friend of Kevin’s you would have known he was the best person. He was always smiling and had a heart of gold.”

This incident is not the first case of an individual dying after an assault at a nightclub
Norwegian Andreas Bull-Gundersen died after an assault at Rust in Nørrebro in 2009.

The 25-year-old, who was a haemophiliac, had a glass smashed on his head and died from his wounds after hospital staff misunderstood him when he told them he was a ‘hemofili’ – thinking he had told them he was a ‘homofil’, Dansih for ‘homophobe’, he was sent home where he died from a brain haemorrhage.

His attacker was identified as 28-year-old Waheed Sarwar, who is thought to have fled to his native Pakistan and is still wanted by Interpol.
